Brief History:

The School of Foreign Languages (SFL) is a premier Inter-Services institute of India and functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India. The SFL enjoys a unique status among the leading educational institutions of our country as it has, to its credit, the unparalleled distinction of offering quality education in more than 18 major foreign languages.

The School of Foreign Languages was established by the Ministry of Defence in 1948 with the purpose of imparting training in different foreign languages to the personnel of the Armed Forces and other government departments. The Government of India granted permanent status to the SFL in 1954 in recognition of the strategic importance of foreign language teaching.

From a humble beginning, the School has gradually risen both in terms of quantity and quality. It has metamorphosed into an educational institute of great repute and excellence. While the strength of the SFL faculty has increased to 13, the number of students at any given time of the year is not less than 200.

The School has been imparting foreign language training for more than seven decades and is regarded a pioneer institute in foreign language teaching throughout India.

Since its inception in 1948 the School has shifted its premises four times. Till 1987 it functioned from the following locations:

  • Jhind House, New Delhi
  • Punjab Bhawan, New Delhi
  • L Block, Central Secretariat, New Delhi
  • RK Puram, New Delhi

At present the SFL is located at 25, Lodhi Estate, Max Mueller Marg, New Delhi 110003.
